Finally. I futzed around with the fontpath defaulted to by our locally configured (despite my posting from a CMU CS machine, the network I was complaining about is privately administered in a lab here) X11 R3 software, added in the correct directories, figured out with a great deal of help from a friend on campus how to get a font such as -adobe-courier-bold-o-normal--10-100-75-75-m-60-iso8859-1 to be used by xterm, and finally am now going through the long process of selecting the right font to use.
