[comp.windows.x] Running a dvi previewer on an X windows terminal

isaac@goanna.oz (Isaac Balbin) (08/04/89)

We are looking at a 16" NCD X window, configured with 3 Mb.
We have found that xdvi and texx both seem to die if the file
is more than say 6 pages or even for a short file if you try to
magnify. We are using the normal 300dpi cmr fonts.
Should we be using the 85dpi fonts, or is the thing scaled at the
server end before it gets to the X terminal and so you would expect
no change in the "falling over" rate because the bit maps are shrunk
already?

Does anyone use an X terminal to preview TeX and find the
performance acceptable?

The fonts are scaled by the client & the server never sees anything
but the reduced versions. Using 85dpi fonts will only make things
more legible.

You might try texx2; someone (@ UC Irvine?) told me they had it
running on X terminals. That shouldn't crash your server because I
think that fonts are store more compactly than the pixmaps were. For
example, previewing my thesis causes the server to grow to about 1.2Mb
on a Sun. This could be made smaller by only loading the fonts used
on that particular page, but the silly font cache policy that appears
to exist on the Sun makes that slow.
