[comp.windows.x] SPARCstation X11 questions/problems

mohrfeld@mohrfeld.cs.unc.edu (Katie Mohrfeld) (08/19/89)

I have several questions/problems about running X11 on our SPARCstation
4/60 which has a cgthree0 frame buffer and SPARCstation 4/330 which has
a cgsix0 frame buffer.

1. When I try to start up X11 on the 4/60 by using "xinit -- Xsun -dev
/dev/cgthree0" I get the following error:

                Fatal server bug!
                Can't find any displays

                giving up.
                /usr/local/bin/X11/xinit: Connection refused (errno 61):
unable to connect to X server

But when I use "xinit -- Xsun" without specifying which frame buffer
to use, X11 comes up fine - why is this ? I'm assuming that it uses
cgthree0 because that is the only cg* frame buffer in /dev - is this
    correct ?

2. Should cgthree0 and cgsix0 support the two "virtual" X screens ?

3. The following was posted to the net:

        Article 10769 of comp.windows.x:
             ...

I have posted a hacked version of the sun cg4 server to support the
cg6 as a dumb frame buffer. I have only used it on a 330.
It is available in contrib/cg6.tar of expo.lcs.mit.edu.

The regular Xsun server which we compiled for our Sun-4s works fine
with our 4/60. Do you have to use a special server with the 4/330 ?
(I haven't been able to test the regular Xsun server on the 4/330
yet because it has memory problems.)

4. After exiting X, the screen is left with a light green foreground
and a white background on our SPARCstations and some of our other
Suns. On all of them except the SPARC 4/60, issuing the command
"clear_colormap" will restore the screen to the "normal" black on
white. What causes this problem and is there any way to correct
the problem on the 4/60 without rebooting the machine ?
