[comp.windows.x] xgif for 4-plane display?

tyager@maxx.UUCP (Tom Yager) (08/28/89)

I've got a copy of the sources for Xgif, but it seems to be hardcoded for an
8-plane (256-color) display. I'd like to make use of the 16-color server I'm
using to display some of the 16-bit GIF files I have, but Xgif is creating
8-plane Images.

I don't understand enough about the way Xgif works to figure out how to adjust
it to handle 4-plane Images. I don't want to break its ability to resize
images on the fly to match a given geometry, either.

Lastly (this is getting to be a taller order by the moment), I'd appreciate
some tips on the use of a private colormap. Many of the 16-color GIF images
require all 16 colors. That's impossible using the standard (shared) colormap.

Just so you know, the OS is ISC's 386/ix v2.0.1, and the X is their own 11.3.

Thanks to all in advance. Responses via email, please.
