After finally reading (scanning) 1800+ articles, and trying to get back into x windows, I know would like to ask a question. This may seem long and complicated, but any information would be helpful. I am proposing to my management to set up an X testbed that consists of a wide variety of machines; from PCs to mainframes+. This will allow us to convince users that X is a viable product, and also allows us to evaluate vendors in a realistic scenario. What I would like to find out is what machines has X (let's assume X11R3) been ported to "successfully"? Is anyone else using a widely distributed architecture for X? Currently, I am looking at the following: 1) Mac II and a Mac Plus 2) IBM PC (at, rt, 386) 3) DECstation (not sure which one, maybe 3100) 4) Sun 5) Apollo 6) IRIS workstation 7) Convex 8) CDC (not sure model type) 9) IBM (3090?) 10) Cray 11) VAX 8600 running VMS I know that some of the machines listed would only be used for clients. My only exposure to X was under an Apollo, and I did not get to try much cross-machine testing. I am considering eXodus or MacX for the macs, and SCO Open Desktop for the IBM 386. I am not sure if some of the machines listed are worth having X on (for clients), but I listed everything I could think of that is worth listing. As mentioned, I would like to be running the same version of X (r3?) on all platforms. I would be willing to summarize the information I receive. Basically, any machine that is running X11R3, let me know. Louis McDonald An X-Xer, hopefully getting back into it. -- Louis McDonald The Aerospace Corporation louis@aerospace.aero.org
