Thanks to all who emailed me advice on whether I should buy an
Xterminal or a workstation.  The bottom line was yes, given the
considerations: (1) cost; (2) administrative effort (given that my job
is to do science, not computer work); (3) flexibility for future
technologies.  If you'd like me to email you a summary of the advice
and my thought process in making the decision, email me.
