[comp.windows.x] pbm--is there an 8bit color version?

I have what looks to be a January 1989 version of PBM--the portable bit-map
conversion package. Iworks great, but I need to be able to convert color
images into a pbm format. Has anyone written an extension to PBM for 8 bit
color?
