[net.news] nuclear power: safer and cheaper

piet@mcvax.UUCP (Piet Beertema) (04/27/84)

	>The energy concentration of uranium is 3.5 million times that of
	>coal. This fundamental physical fact is why nuclear power is
	>cheaper and safer than power from coal.
What's the relation between energy concentration and safety???

	>If you wonder why some people are such anti-nukes even after knowing
	>these facts......
We anti-nukes also know a bit more about nuclear waste than the mere fact
that the amount is less, you know....

Didn't someone propose to bury it in a salt dome in Holland?

In all seriousness: One day, while trapped in a colleague's car, I
was forced to listen to Paul Harvey. That day, he had some news story
(between the True Value ads) concerning a man in Utah who had developed
some way to render certain types of nuclear waste much less harmful,
if not inert. (NO FLAMES ABOUT MY NAIVETE....I don't believe it-) This
was supposedly using a linear accelerator or some such device. It was
two years ago when I heard this, has anyone heard anything since ?
