The Brown Workstation Environment (BWE) and FIELD are now available on expo.lcs.mit.edu. BWE --- BWE is an easy to program user interface toolkit that runs on top of X. We do not claim it has the best looking user interface (some unenlightened individuals might even call it ugly) but it does make it easy to write applications that use menus, dialog boxes, editors and so on. Also, it is easy to change the way BWE looks: at the moment BWE supports two different styles of user interface- one simple and one with 3d objects. You can choose the style by setting an environment variable. Another important feature of BWE is that it can (and does) run with multiple threads of control. FIELD ----- FIELD is an integrated programming environment that runs on top of Unix and X (although it requires BWE). It provides graphical interfaces to dbx, make, gprof, and other Unix programs as well as new utilities for dynamic data structure display and algorithm animation. Both BWE and Field are used in courses taught here at Brown and are reasonably well debugged. However, building these releases should be considered only by gurus as we have not tested the building procedure extensively outside of our environment. We would appreciate comments and bug reports on the software. Additional information about the software is provided in the various README files.
