[comp.windows.x] Use of local disks for performance

sorensen@athena.mit.edu (Alma G. Sorensen) (10/14/89)

Howdy.

I recall a few months back, there was a discussion of X-terminals
versus diskless workstations versus diskful workstations.

I don't want to get that started again, but I do remember
a posting from someone at Athena that basically said,
"We at Athena don't think diskless machines are the way to go."

I remember this person's reasoning being particularly salient;
would that person (whose name I recognized at the time but can't
recall) mind e-mailing me his/her rationale? Sorry for wasting
net bandwidth, but it's important to convince a group of people
I work with.

I wouldn't mind receiving other rational viewpoints as well,
especially re the benefits of local disks, for either storage
or swap space.

Thanks,

Greg Sorensen
