[comp.windows.x] HP widget set on contrib support

dan@watson.ibm.COM (Walt Daniels) (10/16/89)

There have been many questions recently on where to get the HP widget
set and then after they get it how to get the fixes to let it work
on R3. Since HP people don't seem to be replying to these requests
or supplying the fixes, this is really a question for the HP people!
Is the HP widget set going to be supported?

I suspect not, as most of their people are working full time on Motif.
Motif is really a much better widget set (it has the look and feel of
the better version of the HP widget set that was supplied to HP
customers.) Given the likely answer, I would hope that all you X'ers would
switch to Motif (or if you can't get access or afford the price) switch to
the Athena widgets.

Perhaps the OSF Motif people will act to get Motif more readily
available. I have it internally to IBM but we have not shipped it
yet. I think HP is the only one to ship or announce ship.
Incidentally, if you buy the source license it ports easily to IBM AIX
and probably most other vendors. The cost, $1000, is certainly small
compared to writing and rewriting applications for different widget
sets.

Application writers really need some good advice soon!

The R2 HP widget set is supported by HP. The R3 HP widget set is not
supported by HP --I don't think that any of us have even looked at it.

That is correct.
