[comp.windows.x] IBMish-PC as SLIP x terminal

voss@s.cs.uiuc.edu (09/27/89)

Has anyone out there successfully run X over a SLIP line from an IBMish-PC?
		      What software did you use?
A DOS solution is prefered, but send UNIX solutions too.

I'm trying to avoid buying a dedicated X-terminal, and have PC's sitting idle.

						thanks,
						Bill Voss

Here is the summary of responses to my "IBMish-PC as SLIP x terminal" posting.

GSS seems to be the one and only choice for an MS-DOS X server.
GSS and SUN both distribute PC-SLIP implementations.

				Thanks everybody,

GSS's software works over our SLIP kernels, as well as our token ring
and ethernet kernels.

PC-NFS (from Sun Microsystems) can be run over Ethernet or a Serial line
(slip). They also supply source to the nfs daemon required on the other
end if you want to do NFS as well (and don't have a Sun).
