[comp.windows.x] X terminals recommendation ??

eho@clarity.Princeton.EDU (Eric Ho) (10/07/89)

Does anyone out there has any suggestions for X terminals at around $2K ?
I've X11R3 running on my various 4.0.1 Sun-3's & Sun-4's.

I'm mostly interested in new features, reliability & any hassels for me to fix
(anything, including X11R3) at my Suns' end.

Any pointers/info would be much appreciated.

If you're looking for an X terminal at home, I'd say the GraphOn
OptimaX 200 is the only choice. I'm using one right this second from
home over a pair of Telebit T2500s. It works very nicely. It's great to
have the same work environment at home as I do at work. It will even
work decently over 2400BPS links but 19200 is much nicer.

They have advantages when used in computer labs also. They don't
require expensive ethernetting or network administration since they tie
into an already existing network host via a serial line (RS232) and run
the X server on that host, not the terminal. This last point means they
also don't have to have some semi-infinite amount of memory to run
properly. They take advantage of the virtual memory of the network host.

[OPINION:] Basically I think that GraphOn is the only company that's
solved the problem correctly. Running the server in the terminal is
wrong. [END OPINION.]

This isn't to say that they don't have problems. I've been talking
with them about several problems. They've been very responsive and I
think they'll solve all of them in time.

Which brings me to the DISCLAIMER: I've ended up talking with the people
at GraphOn so much that I don't believe I can be counted as an impartial
witness any more. I'm doing BETA testing of new software for them, and I
can't describe what I view their problems are because I can't untangle
what's non-disclosure and what's not.

However, I think that you'd find most of the above comments unchanged
from my postings when I first received my OptimaX 200 before I started
dealing with the company so extensively. (I'll send copies of those
postings privately to anyone who requests - no point in wasting network
bandwidth on reruns. They include what I viewed then as some of their
potential problems.)

In any case, no matter what my potential bias may be, I certainly think
it's worth giving GraphOn a call:

Graphon's address and phone:

	Graphon Corporation
	1980 Concourse Drive
	San Jose, CA 95131
	800-472-7466
	408-435-8400 (outside the U.S.)

I've been informed that it's not kosher for me to plug any product as a
United States Department of Energy employee. My response:

The first amendment is not abridgable -- even by the US
government. I will however follow up with a disclaimer stating
that my opinions are not necessarily those of LLNL, DOE, or any
part of the US government. It would be a dubious pleasure, at
best, to have them shared by any of those organizations.
