I would like to solicit opinion regarding the activity of evaluating the relative performance of a given X Window System implementation against other X implementations or other non-X window systems (I know the latter comparison is difficult, to say the least). I know speaking the word "benchmark" in certain circles is taboo, so I will avoid the use of it, but I think you know what I'm alluding to. In your opinion: * Does it make any sense to develop and utilize a set of programs which evaluate the performance of an X Window System? Why or why not? * What metrics should be used in evaluating a window system? What seems obvious is things like speed and efficiency (i.e. how does it consume other resources such as CPU time, network bandwidth, memory, etc). * What should such a set of test programs include, in terms of display or non-display operations? If people wish to respond directly to me I wil summarize back to this newsgroup. Thanks, Denis
