What is the current status of PEX? Is there any implementation existed yet? If so, who are they? What platform does it run on? Thanks in advance for any answer to the above questions. Ghee S. Teo

What is the current status of PEX? A subset of the X Consortium members are sponsoring development of a sample implementation of PEX. Target date for public release is around the end of 1990. The PEX protocol specification is still undergoing modifications, as the implementation turns up problems. Is there any implementation existed yet? I believe Digital has a product out using a subset of PEX. I am not aware of any other commercial implementations at this time, but your best bet is to contact vendors. For reference, here are the companies sponsoring the PEX effort: Data General Corp. Digital Equipment Corp. Evans and Sutherland Fujitsu Limited Hewlett-Packard Company (with Apollo) International Business Machines, Inc. Network Computing Devices, Inc. Open Software Foundation Solbourne Computer Inc. Sony Corp. Stardent Sun Microsystems Inc. Tektronix Inc. UNICAD Inc.

The PEX Protocol Specification Version 4.0 is firming up. It should be out for public review near the end of the year - with all hopes of being on the R4 tape. There were three vendors demoing PEX at SIGGRAPH89: DEC, HP & Sun. DEC was demoing a slightly modified Version 3+ protocol and HP & Sun were demoing servers based on the 3.2 protocol. DEC is selling thier version of PEX. Platforms? high buck 3D boxes. The MIT X consortium gathered a group of sponsors to fund a sample implementation which should enter alpha test next spring with the hope of releasing the code to MIT in a little over a year. Sometime in 1991 most 3D vendors should have product quality PEX servers based on the same version of the protocol and that actually talk to each other. Before then many things will be called PEX servers. -Jan Hardenbergh - jch@apollo.com - (508)-256-6600 Hewlett Packard / Graphics Technology Division @ Apollo
