[comp.windows.x] X Window System support in OSI environments

klee@WSL.DEC.COM (Ken Lee) (11/09/89)

I am starting a group to discuss the technical implications of
trying to map the X Network Protocol to OSI; in particular OSI
Layer 7 (application layer).

I will post discussions on comp.protocols.iso.

To start, ANSI X3H3.6 is seeking individuals interested in
working on an OSI mapping for the ANSI X DSE Standard. So far
the group has reviewed two proposals:

 a.	run X directly over a connection-oriented Transport layer
 b.	run X as another application layer protocol using minimal
services of ACSE, Presentation and the FTAM unstructured
	binary presentation context.

It seems likely that a new work item will be started to
technically address this issue. Most folks are leaning toward
proposal b above.

I will post summaries and project status.
