[comp.windows.x] Up-coming MOTIF Books, etc?

ries@venice.SEDD.TRW.COM (Marc Ries) (10/19/89)

  A Couple of things:

   1) Does anyone know when we/I might expect to see a MOTIF programmers
guide book, something along the lines of Young's book on XToolkit
      and the HP Widget?

   2) Does anyone know the new phone # for Nutshell Books (O'Reilly)
and when the rumored XToolkit and MOTIF volumes might be
      forthcoming?

   Thanks,

To an inquiry I made earlier, David Young (author of _X Window Systems --
Programming and Applications with Xt_) says the following:

Just FYI: A Motif version of my book will be avaliable late this year from
Prentice Hall, as will a five volume set written by the OSF. Addison-Wesley
also has several books on Motif targeted for release next spring. You
should have lots of documentation to choose from.

I hope this helps some.

It's Doug Young, but the information is otherwise correct to the best of
my knowledge (Doug told me the same thing :-).

ASP (A Systems Publications) has announced a volume 4 of their X series
(volumes 1 and 2 are the official MIT/DEC manuals reprinted, 3 is widgets)
to cover Motif. They're uncertain when it will come out.

Their main phone number has stayed the same (1-800-338-NUTS). If that doesn't
work for you, you're probably in California and want to use 1-800-533-6887.
They have no idea when volumes 4 and 5 (volumes 1 and 2 are cleaned up reprints
of the official manuals, 3 is a users guide, 0 is for the X Network Protocol)
are going to come out. They won't even take backorders for them, which
indicates that they're way, way, way out there.

On the other hand, they may show up tomorrow. The first we knew that there was
going to be a volume 0 was when we opened up a box and (suprise!) there was a
copy. When we called down to ask what was going on, and why there wasn't even
a hint that it was going to come out (we like to announce books in our news-
letter before they come out), we were told that it was quite a surprise to the
people there as well...

I assume that this is due in part to the confusion when they moved a chunk of
the company from Massachusetts to California and that things will settle down
soon. They do do nice (as in useful, not necessarily "pretty") books ...

O'Reilly's 800 toll-free number hasn't changed, although our customer service
group is now located in Sebastopol, California.

   The local number is: 707-829-0515
   From inside California: 800-533-6887
   From outside California: 800-338-6887

Our two-volume set on the X Toolkit Intrinsics (a programmers guide
and a reference manual, with examples based on Athena widgets) will
be available the first of January. The widget sets are similar enough
that these books should serve your purposes as is. Nevertheless, in the
spring we plan to write a Motif version of the toolkit books.

We're also planning to write a Widgets Reference Manual,
which will include Open Look, Motif, and Athena widgets,
due to be published in the spring.

By the way, most of our R&D group is still on the East Coast,
in Cambridge, Mass.: (617) 354-5800.

Our phone numbers are printed in our catalog. If you're not on
our mailing list, e-mail your postal address to me and I'll see
that your name is included.
