[net.news] new Makefile for 2.10.1 posted

chuqui@nsc.UUCP (06/10/84)

I have posted to {net.sources,net.news.b} a new Makefile for the 2.10.1
distribution of news. This came about because I started doing some serious
hacking to the system and came to realize that the old Makefile lost very
badly with lint and sccs. The new one takes care of that and also supports
the new C postnews (as pn.c and pn), Peter Gross's batching software
(bnproc) instead of batch and unbatch, and other assorted niceties. It's
been beaten on pretty well but it probably isn't perfect. Comments and
improvements are welcome. This should help those people who were trying to
get vnews up from my latest postings as well.

I've been cleaning up inews significantly recently. The lint listing has
dropped from 25K to about 13K and most of what is left could most likely be
ignored. I'm also in the process of integrating bnproc into inews because
the bnproc -> inews interface is horribly inefficient [as it stands bnproc
spawns TWO processes for each message and rnews writes each message to disk
TWICE. My hopes is to get this to NO extra processes and a single write).
I've also found pieces of dead code throughout inews that I'm trying to
exorcise. When I'm done and it works as reliably as inews does now I'll
post it to the net.
