I would like to be able to pop up black and white bitmapped images from within an X-windows application which allows execution of external programs. I need something more efficient in storage than xwd/xwud. xgif works nicely with a color display, but I need something which works with monochrome displays, too. (Unless I am misunderstanding something, xgif seems to work only on color displays.) Does anyone know of a program or patch to xgif which will work with monochrome? (I'm not committed to GIF, but I'd like to use some common, but storage-efficient format.)
