[net.news] Why not call net.general net.everyone?

rf@wu1.UUCP (05/29/84)

Why don't we rename net.general net.everyone? That ought to
make the purpose of net.general clear and reduce the number of
misplaced postings.

It would also have the advantage of putting what is now "net.general"
BEFORE "net.followup", instead of after it, as it now is on all
machines with an alphabetic organization of the active groups.

That way, you could see the submissions BEFORE the followups,
since the software doesn't allow you any personal control over
the order of presentation (reference earlier discussion on that
topic).

Anybody know why, when USENET was created in the computer center
over in the northwest corner of the Garden of Eden, "net.followup"
was not named "net.general.followup" so it would come AFTER
net.general on all machines automatically? Must have been that snake
coiled up by the console...

I've said this before and I'll say it again

net.general has already been renamed. It's now called net.announce.
net.general is still there because net.announce is considered
experimental. However, except for a bug in 2.10 news which is
fixed in most machines, it works pretty well.

I think most people have already unsubscribed from net.general.
If you have something to say and really believe it's important
enough for almost everybody to read it, use net.announce.
