[comp.windows.x] Don't use USPosition by default

toml@ninja.Solbourne.COM (Tom LaStrange) (11/28/89)

This is a plea to all you folks out there developing applications that
require some sort of default window layout. Please Please Please do
not use USPosition hints to force the window manager to layout your
windows. Instead use the PPosition (Program Specified Position)
hints.

I know, most current window managers simply ignore the PPosition hints
simply because they always seem to be set. In R4, twm will have an
option to use or ignore PPosition hints and I would urge other window
manager writers to do something similar so that we can claim back this
needed option. I have also heard that Xt may be fixed so that it does
not always set PPosition.

You may think that it's not that big of a deal, and in fact, most
window managers may choose to treat USPosition and PPosition as the
same, but it is very nice from a window manager point of view to know
whether the user said "PUT THIS WINDOW HERE", or the program said "if
you can, I would like the window placed here."
