[comp.windows.x] X11 in a heterogeneous environment + some beginner questions

meulenbr@cstw68.prl.philips.nl (Frans Meulenbroeks) (11/29/89)

Hi!

Here are a number of questions which I (as a rather X novice) have
accumulated over the last few days.
I would be very happy if someone could help me a little.

my environment:
server: X11R3 from the MIT tape on a sun 3/80 running sunos 4.0.3
clients: on SUN, DECstation, HP 9000

the questions:
- I try to run the program dxue on our DECstation. It comes up
smoothly, but when accessing the menu bar it dies a horrible death
  saying:
X Protocol error detected by server: font or color name does not exist
Failed request major op code 45 X_OpenFont
Failed request minor op code 0 (if applicable)
ResourceID 0x700036 in failed request (if applicable)
Serial number of failed request 214
Current serial number in output stream 223

since the message names X_OpenFont, I suspect the problem is a missing
font. Is there a way to subsitute this font by another font? How??
(I cannot use the DECstation fonts since they exist in compiled form
only, and of course the bits and bytes do not match)

- as a window manager I'm using the motif window manager mwm.
However mwm does not seem to deal with programs like xprop and xplaces
properly. Does anyone know how to fix this, or is there another
program that will do the job.

- Has anyone ever tried to run open windows programs when using the
vanilla X11 server? The Xnews server supplied by sun is way too slow
for me. Some programs seem to run. All programs start with odd window
sizes. Some other programs don't run. This is again under mwm. Most
other window managers don't allow any of the programs to run.
(Something silly: when started directly mailtool runs, but when
opening the icon it crashes (again having strange window sizes), but
when mailtool is started from fileview it runs ok (after resizing the
  windows of course)

- I've seen references to a program called x11start, but cannot find it
on the X11R3 tape, nor in my comp.sources.x archive.
Where/how can I obtain this. Is it worthwhile??

And finally:

- is there already a target date when X11R4 will be out?

- can anybody recommend a few good X books

Thanks in advance!

What UWS version are you running? I fixed a bug like this a long time ago.
The problem was the lack of the DECwindows cursor font. Now, if that font
doesn't exist, it falls back to the default X cursor font.
