[comp.windows.x] X windows network bandwidth estimate

ckollars@sun.COM (Chuck Kollars - Sun BOS Mktg Eng Support) (12/05/89)

I'm looking for some VERY ROUGH rules of thumb for network bandwidth
required by a remote X-window. As an example of how rough I mean,
something like the following would be fine.
-an X window running xterm uses twice as much bandwidth as an rlogin
   session using 'vi'
-an X window running a fancy word processor on a remote system uses
three times as much bandwidth as an rlogin session using 'vi'

thanks! -chuck kollars

PS. I already know that X bandwidth requirements depend on many many
variables (type of screen, size of window, user typing speed, memory
in server, etc. etc. etc.). Nevertheless, my assignment is to
provide some sort of guestimate. If I can get within a factor of 3,
it will suit my purposes. (In fact, it's probably good enough if I
can get within an order of magnitude.)

If you don't have neatly wrapped "rules of thumb", how about sending
me some "real world experiences".
