[comp.windows.x] ANNOUNCING NCSA XImage & XDataSlice

thompson@uxe.cso.uiuc.edu (12/05/89)

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications has developed two
X11 based tools for interactive data analysis. As with all NCSA software,
the X based tools are public domain and may be down loaded from
NCSA's anonymous ftp server ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu (128.174.20.50).

NCSA XImage is a 2D data analysis tool that incorporates features such
as viewing a color cartesian or polar image of the data, displaying real
data in spread sheet fashion, creating color histograms, contour plots,
and grey level shaded plots. In addition, XImage has extensive palette
manipulation features that include expansion, compression, rotation, and
flipping. The user may also change the palette by redrawing RGB, CMY, HSV
component levels. For sequences of data, XImage allows the user to view
them as an animation sequence.

NCSA XDataSlice is a 3D data analysis tool. With it the user can slice
apart a cube of data at any orthogonal or arbitrary angle and see the
a resulting color raster image. Slicing the data cube orthogonally,
the user can see the real data values in a spread sheet fashion along
side the image. The user can use the third dimension of the data cube
as a time variable and animate through the cube along any axis or at
any arbitrary angle. Other features include tiling several slices of the
cube, slicing and dicing, volumetric rendering and iso-surface plots.

Sample data and some binaries for XImage and XDataSlice are also
available on the ftp server.
