I have just discovered that it is possible for those of us without an ARPANET account to be put on the mailing lists for the ARPANET discussion groups. All you have to know is how to send mail to an ARPANET address. To do this, you have to know the name of a gateway site to ARPA (I use dual!ucbvax!, but this probably varies according to where your account is located). Postfix the ARPA address to this in double quotes. Suppose, for example, you wished to join the arms-d discussion group; all you have to do is mail your request to "ARMS-D-REQUEST@MIT-MC.ARPA". For other groups, just substitute the correct group name into this address. My sincere thanks to Mark Thompson, who kindly answered my request for this information. I followed his instructions, and it worked perfectly.
