[net.news] General Newsgroups

General Newsgroups_____________________________________________________________

I guess I'll add my two-cent's worth. I propose the following, in
the venerable |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| bulleted list format:

	    o Remove net.general.

o Use net.announce for items of general interest. Since this is a
moderated newsgroup, it will be possible to get it started on the
	      right foot.

o Keep net.followup for unmoderated followup to net.announce.

o Let net.misc take the kitchen-sink traffic at first, but modify
the next release of news to prohibit multiple postings that in-
	      clude net.misc.

o After a fair amount of time, make net.announce unmoderated.
The inertia, the new name, and the thousands of "this message
doesn't belong here" replys (via mail, we hope) should keep it
doing what it's meant to do.

My main concern is to avoid moderation. I really think we can get
along without it and we should: we're pioneers in a new form of communication
and the precedents we set are important. I'd like to see free expression be
counted among those precedents.
