[comp.windows.x] MSDOS X

stephenj@deblil.Sun.COM (Stephen Johnson) (12/06/89)

I have a Dell system 310 (386) with 1 meg at home and it runs MSDOG
3.2. Is there a version of X windows which will run on this system?

I realize that I can get some version of Un*x for too much money and
then get X on Un*x (again for too much money). Maybe, someone out there
knows of a company that sells X for the EGA/VGA graphics card and
works on MSDOG (that isn't too expensive).

OR, is it possible to grab the X source and compile it for MSDOG and
the EGA/VGA?

Thanks.

Various vendors, including IBM, sell X servers for 386 MSDOS machines.
Some of these products are software-only. Others are hardware and
software. I know of noone, however, that sells any X client software
for MSDOS. You have to run your clients on other machines connected to
your MSDOS machine with a network like Ethernet.

Hewlett Packard just annouced an X server that runs on DOS. I don't see how
you could just compile MIT with EGA/VGA, because MIT X11R4 relies heavily on
sockets, and other UNIX specific stuff like mmap.

Not to mention, if you are talking about running both server and clients on
the same machine, where to you get a multi-tasking executive. DESQView?
The server, as compiled on our Sun, takes over 600Kbytes of disk, and over
1.5Mbytes when it runs. Where do you get that kind of memory under DOS?

Note to all flame throwers, I realize that just because it takes 600Kbytes on
our Sun, doesn't neccessarily mean it will take that much disk or memory on
some brand x machine.

Software emulation of these features in the DOS environment is possible.
I thought that maybe, some great DOS hacker out there might have done this
already.

Again, software emulation of the server/client multi-tasking executive
might have been done. [This is what DES*View does.] It doesn't seem that
difficult. Naturally, it will be very slow, but thats OK. It just has to
run, thats all.

There are methods (expanded and extended memory) for getting around the MSDOS
[brain-damaged] 640k barrier.

OK, here it is:

Graphics Software Systems
9590 SW Gemini Dr.
Beaverton OR 97005-7161
(503) 641-2200

You're the second person to POST a request for a phone number. Why didn't you
just pick up the phone, enter 1-503-555-1212, and ASK for the number????!!!

It would have been MUCH faster.

Sheesh!

p.s. Tried to e-mail this mini-flame, but it bounced.
