1. I am running 11.3 under BSD4.3 on a VaxStation II. Everything works fine except when I try to display a menu. It takes over a minute for the menu to appear. This is not a function of the window manager, it happens under both twm and uwm. It may be a function of the color server. There is no problem when running on a VaxStation II with a B&W monitor. We have built the server with gcc, both with and without optimizations, with no difference in menu speed. We have applied all patches available from expo. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what might be the problem? 2. I am running under xdm. I would like to use the .Xresources file to control the appearance, etc. of the various applications that I am running. But this requires that I know the resource names to modify. By looking at existing resource files I have noticed the use of some resources named "wm_option". Are these described anywhere? In general, can someone point me at a document that describes the various resources and how to specify them? Thanks. It takes over a minute for the menu to appear. Try disabling backing-store and save-unders on your server, by adding -su -bs as command line options to the server (in your Xservers file for xdm). In general, can someone point me at a document that describes the various resources and how to specify them? Not really. The X(1) man page lists some trivial things. You pretty much have to look at the documentation for each application, and then you may also have to look at the documentation for the toolkit used to build the application, in order to know what resources are available.

In the long run, this sort of thing will prove to be unacceptable. There _must_ be some sort of method for determining the resources available in an application; at the least, some sort of utility program that, when envoked on an X application, prints out the available resources. Of course, this will require that the resourse names be marked in some special way, or held in some list available to said utility program. -- Michael Kent INTERNET: mike@aleytys.uu.net Center for M.C.E.
