I want to test different servers. That is, I want to compare servers on various X-terminals, Suns, Dec workstations, etc. What would be a good way to do this? I am not looking for an extremely rigourous text, and I don't really feel like downloading 30 or 40 mb of the X Test Suite, which I am sure has a lot of protocol tests and so forth. But we are evaluating X terminals (and by comparison Suns and so forth), but I have no idea how to do it. Subjective things like when you pop up a window, "it sure seems fast", are not real helpful. Any ideas? If there are some good tests in the X Test Suite, maybe someone could make available that part of it. ----- John Carey University of Illinois Dept. of Computer Science carey@a.cs.uiuc.edu {uu-net,pur-ee,convex,...}!uiucdcs!carey

If performance is what you're concerned about, I suggest you try using x11perf, from Digital. The latest version is available via anonymous ftp on expo, and will also be included in R4. It tests a great many aspects of an X server. We at MIT used it constantly to measure our speedups while working on the R4 server.
