Hey, folks, if you are smart, you'll go to any machine BUT EXPO to get the X distribution. It is likely to have the poorest performance of any site. EXPO is an interior machine at MIT; the other sites are all logically closer to you than EXPO. For example: crl.dec.com is directly on NEARNET. Gatekeeper.dec.com is directly on BARNET. In addition, EXPO now limits the number of incoming FTP connections. Jim Gettys Digital Equipment Corporation Cambridge Research Laboratory

For those of you using or planning on using uunet.uu.net, please use ns.uu.net 192.48.96.3 ns is a 3 cpu Pyramid MIServer that is currently doing NOTHING but acting as an ftp server for X11R4. uunet will continue to carry the X distribution, but right now it's getting the living hell beat out of it, so it's to everyone's advantage to use the faster, less loaded machine (ns.uu.net). ns and uunet are on the same Ethernet which is connected to SURANET via T-1 (currently sustaining over 700 kbps since 5pm!) so there is no advantage to using uunet over ns and a big speed difference from using the unloaded ns. Thanks. ---rick

Gatekeeper.dec.com was down from 10pm/3Jan to 1am/4Jan due to bugs in its NFS service which have never been seen before. The fix, finally, was to disallow NFS completely until I find out why Ultrix 3.1 cannot deal with 200 people all over the NSFNET (and probably elsewhere) all trying to mount /archive and copy files from it. This means that FTP will be the only supported export mechanism for a while. It also means that decwrl's UUCP and Easynet neighbors can't access R4 for now. I'm not too worried about Gatekeeper only exporting via FTP, since it sent out 2 gigabytes of FTP traffic in the first four hours after R4's release. (We normally do less than 100 megabytes for an entire 24-hour period.) I've copied all the files from GATEKEEPER.DEC.COM to LLL-CRG.LLNL.GOV which is also on BARRNET. The files all checksum correctly. The files are in the subdirectory pub/X.V11R4. If you can't make it through to GATEKEEPER, feel free to try LLL-CRG. Casey

Is the whole ~ftp area from uunet.uu.net [NFS] mounted over to ns.uu.net or is ns.uu.net only for ftp'ing X11R4? /--------------------------------------------------------------\ |Jeff Michaud michaud@decwrl.dec.com michaud@decvax.dec.com| |DECnet-ULTRIX #include <standard/disclaimer.h> | \--------------------------------------------------------------/
