It crossed my mind that the semantics of mentioning multiple groups could be changed -- i.e., a person only sees a posting if he/she subscribes to ALL the newsgroups mentioned. Then i (for instance) would automatically not see any postings to net.singles which also mentioned net.religion. However, other remarks indicate that some people LIKE the way it is. A global change of semantics from union to intersection would certainly discourage people from mentioning irrelevant newsgroups while posting, ... but maybe this could be a user-selected option in the readnews program, next time it is worked over. That's not going to change people from posting to many newsgroups to posting to fewer. It will have a negative effect in that people will post to the same newsgroup but separately, not at once, thereby forcing readers to see the article in every group, not just once.
