OK, so my server responds to xdpyinfo with number of extensions: 4 SHAPE MIT-SHM Multi-Buffering MIT-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD but oclock and xeyes still obscure rectangular regions of the screen. Should they only obscure elliptical regions? Would this depend upon running an ICCCM-compliant window manager (I'm still running awm)?

Would this depend upon running an ICCCM-compliant window manager (I'm still running awm)? It depends on running a window manager that understands SHAPE. Try twm (or gwm, I think).

Yes. Nifty!

Apparently. (I'm running gwm now.)
