[net.news] Wow! Let's do the time warp again!

mcferrin@inuxc.UUCP (P McFerrin) (08/02/84)

Dating an article ahead of its time is very easy. Consider the following:

	TZ=EST-29 postnews
The -29 (instead of my normal 5) causes date to return the current time/date
corrected to GMT that is 24 hours in advance. The localtime(3c) does not
check for valid range of numeric fields in TZ.

I'm afraid that I rather resent inuxc!mcferrin's allegation that I rigged
the date on that article !! :-)

We do occasionally get screwed up dates here too - there was a bug at ukc
a while back which was doing this, though I'm not sure if it's ukc doing it
again. Anyone there care to comment ?

Oh yes - thanx to all the folks who replied to my query. The upshot of this
is that if you have vnews, use `w' to save the article without headers,
otherwise use one of the hacks published (there were a few sent to me as
well, so if you want them, let me know). This does not solve the problem of
signature lines though - let's see a standard for shar file starts and ends!

(BTW - the method which detects `From' lines is not suitable here, since
ukc and some other news gateways insert `From' lines in strange places)
