The $(TOP)/mit/README-R4 file says to make sure that the files in the /usr/lib/X11/xdm directory are appropriate for my site. I don't have a directory by that name. I did a 'make World', 'make install', and 'make install.man' on a Sun3 under SunOS4.0.3 with SunOS tools. The only change I made in $(TOP)/mit/config was to eliminate HasSaberC (since I don't have it). Where should the contents of /usr/lib/X11/xdm come from? Where should the contents of /usr/lib/X11/xdm come from? You can just install them by hand, or set your configuration to: #define InstallXdmConfig YES Then remake the xdm Makefile and do a "make install" there.
