Since I've seen a few people from DEC responding to other questions on the net, I figure this is a good place to ask this. What are DEC's plans as far as DECwindows, Motif and R4? That is, when and how will they be releasing upgrades to current installations. We have two DECstation 3100's (currently on loan from DEC but I'm sure we will purchase at least one of them soon) and I'd like to try to keep up with the "latest and greatest." DEC has announced a schedule for supporting Motif (shipping libraries and porting current applications to Motif), but I don't remember what it is. Many of the features in X11R4 appeared in UWS2.1 and UWS2.2. The UWS2.2 Xlib includes all the new interfaces of the X11R4 Xlib and the UWS2.2 X server should support any X11R4 client. You sales rep should have more complete info. Ken Lee DEC Western Software Laboratory, Palo Alto, Calif. Internet: klee@decwrl.dec.com uucp: uunet!decwrl!klee

That would be great except I heard DEC will probably be R4 fully after release of Ultrix 4.0. I hope that you are right though... Reha

Sorry about that. UWS2.2 servers will support any X11R4 client using the core X11R4 protocol. Certain extensions, such as Display PostScript are also supported, but not SHAPE right now. No. No. Digital intends to go to X11R4 just as we went to X11R2, and X11R3. The newest version of UWS was well into field test by the time X11R4 was ready. Digital's intention is to phase in Motif support, making it available for use and programming first and then basing DECwindows applications on it later. For more details, talk to your sales rep along with you local ULTRIX support. Fred
