[comp.windows.x] Xrooms available for X11R3, X11R4

mikey@decwrl.dec.com (Mike Yang) (01/11/90)

Xrooms is an implementation of rooms for X. It organizes windows into
related groups, called "rooms." A room typicaly contains all the
windows relating to a particular task or context; reading mail or
developing a particular application, for example. Xrooms manages the
position and state of the windows in each room, and makes it easy for
users to switch from room to room.

Xrooms began several months ago, when we had an informal discussion of
whether rooms could be implemented for X, and what changes would be
necessary. Soon after this discussion, a quick prototype of xrooms
was written. Since then, several people have made intermittent
contributions to xrooms in their (spare) time, bringing it to its
current form.

Xrooms should run under any ICCCM-compliant window manager, and has
been tested with mwm, gwm, and R4 twm. Additionally, xrooms works
(though possibly, not as well) with dxwm (using the -dxwm switch)
and hpwm.

Xrooms is far from being a polished utility. For instance, it has
been tested only under UWS 2.2 running on DEC machines, and was just
very recently linked with the X11R4 libraries. Its user interface is
also somewhat lacking, but provides enough to get by. We welcome your
contributions and comments.

Xrooms is available on gatekeeper.dec.com and expo.lcs.mit.edu as:

	gatekeeper:~ftp/pub/X11/contrib/xrooms.tar.Z
	expo:~ftp/contrib/xrooms.tar.Z.

Additionally, the xrooms sources will appear "shortly" on comp.windows.x.

Oops. I missed one of the DECwindows references when converting
xrooms from Dwt to Xaw. For those of you who already grabbed the tar
file, Here's the diff for xrooms/xrProto.c:

30c30
< #include <X11/Intrinsic.h>
---
> #include <X11/DwtAppl.h>

New tar files will appear of gatekeeper and expo very shortly. My
apologies.
