I see an offal lot of articles with two copies of the signature info, sometimes the same, sometimes different. Can anybody tell me what is going on? Can we fix it for 2.10.2? It's painful for those on 1200 baud terminals as opposed to bitmapped screens -- typically one copy of the signature is already too much. In fact, does someone have a hack for vnews that will identify signature globs and throw them away? (Or put them in the 'H' command which you only use if you REALLY care about the header.) That's a GREAT idea! I would love to have some sort of heuristic in readnews that would make a guess at what portion of the tail of an article was the signature, and not show it to me. There would, of course, be some instances where it guessed wrong or where I really wanted to check the signature to see if it contained a useful mail address. But having it thrown away most of the time would be worth the extra work of reprinting the article whenever I really did want to see the last few lines. (Even at 19200 baud, they are annoying once I've seen the same one more than twice.)

The problem of double signatures would clear up if there was some consistency in the automatic inclusion of the .signature file by the three programs: mail (using the reply option), vnews (using the reply or follow-up option), and postnews. I belive that of these three programs only postnews includes the .signature file. Please -- correct me if I am wrong, I'm just a rookie trying to avoid my double signatures and NULL signatures. Actually, postnews DOESN'T install the .signature. Inews does. that means that anything going through inews (postnews, followups from vnews or readnews, or any homebrew interface) will have signatures appended automatically. I've modified recmail to append signatures automatically as well for consistency sake (it is used by the reply command of readnews and vnews). I've just posted that fix for the beta-test version of 2.10.2, but it is trivial for any previous version as well. The only thing that doesn't (right now, at least) add it automatically is the regular mailer, mainly because I'm lazy and I keep meaning to write my own anyway (no, I don't like Randmail, and I don't like Berkeley mail and I'm too busy/lazy (mostly lazy) to write chuquimail. so far) chuq -- From the depths of the Crystal Cavern: Chuq Von Rospach {amd,decwrl,fortune,hplabs,ihnp4}!nsc!chuqui nsc!chuqui@decwrl.ARPA Dreams, dreams, enchanter!
