We just got OpenWindows 1.0 from Sun. We have a Sun network, and users are pretty evenly split between SunView and X. OpenWindows 1.0 supports both (and NeWS). While most of our users, are just that, users; some of us are developers. As a developer, I want to write my code for R4, not R3. Can I expect my R4 clients to run on the xnews server? Also, is anyone running OpenWindows 1.0 in X11ONLY mode? Is this instance of the xnews server competitive with the R4 server? We're quite pleased with the R4 server, and the xnews server with NeWS just isn't usuable on our 4meg 3/50's (not that it should be, but we have what we have). I'm having a little trouble setting things up, so we've only been able to try it (OpenWindows) out on one of our machines. I will certainly try these things out myself, but in the meantime, I thought I'd ask around for other's experience. If it matters, Sun 3/* machines running SunOS 4.0.3 If any SUN people are out there, when can I expect an R4 based release of OpenWindows? I used OpenLook 1.0 in X11 mode and it seemed fine. I haven't used R4 however. Mike Burbidge mike@cs.byu.edu
