[comp.windows.x] xsight startup problems

DEG41560@UA1VM.BITNET (Rob Smith) (02/01/90)

Hi,
This morning someone wrote in about having problems using xondos (which,
I believe is the PC-xsight package from Locus in an IBM disguise).
(I'm sorry, I lost your address.)
I have
recently found a cure to the unreliability of the 1)start an xclient from
telent 2)logout 3)start xsight cycle. When in stage 1), try the following:

(sleep 45; whatever-xclient -d whatever-host:0)&

I find 45 seconds is just enough time to logout and start xsight.

Some other comments on PC-xsight:
1) If you are on less than a 286 machine, the product is likely to
run to slow and exhaust memory to quickly to be useful. IBM and Locus
should warn potential users of this!

2) The tcpip that came with our version is brain-dead, and we can't seem
to get any other version to work with xsight. The version we have does not
support subnet routing, and the telenet will only emulate a vt52 (blech!).

3) We have been promised a new version of xsight soon. Some of you may have
the new version. It may have many of the bugs worked out. If anyone knows,
please post to the net.

4) The new version is supposed to have a way of supporting xdm. I dunno
anything about this, except for the sales-rep propagated rumour.

5) In case xsight 2 turns out to be a disapointment, a couple of other vendors
offer similar products. Check Graphic Software Systems for PC-Xview
(503) 641-2200, and Integrated Inference Machines for PC-X11 (714)978-6776.
I have not seen the former (if anyone has, please post), but I saw a
demo of the later at IJCAI'89. The product runs X-Windows in a Microsoft
Window. Its speed and display quality were impressive. However, I believe
its price is $400-ish, where the other two X-PC products (LOCUS and GSS)
are $100-ish (I believe). IIM's product also requires at least a 286
and extended memory (2 meg, I believe).

6) Everything in this letter may be wrong! If anyone has other experiences/
information to relay, please post. I've seen several queries on this topic,
and next-to-no replies.

7) Does X11R4 have the promised "improved support for xterminals with xdm"?
Does anyone have experience with this and PC-X products?

All info is good info.
Rob.
