[comp.windows.x] Low Cost Windows?

jlo@mcdapps.phx.mcd.mot.com (Joe Ortiz) (02/02/90)

So you can get an X Terminal for as low as $999?
Well, as we all know, in order to run an X Terminal, we must invest
no only in the terminal(s), but also in host RAM.
How many megs of RAM does your Unix(R) have?
If you have one X Terminal and a dedicated Unix system, I'm sure you
will be able to get by on (let's pick a figure) 4 meg.
I fully expect that on a system which in the past had 16 dumb terminals connected
to it, that in the future those 16 users are going to want to X Window their way
into the User Friendly Skies.
How many megs of RAM will such a system need to have?

More generally asked:

What are some typical RAM requirements for X Clients?
		- How large is Framemaker? Visix Desktop?
		- Any other REAL application sizes??

How much of Xlib gets linked into my application just by the fact that
I make a call to XOpenDisplay? Every client will have at least this much.

Any one have any comparisons for X 11.3 verses X 11.4?

Also, since someone just asked, and I didn't see any answers:

What is the network bandwidth usage for
		- a character-based application (like xterm)
		- a dynamic graphics application (like (pardon me) plaid)
		- a window manager

Any formal analysis will be received with much thanks!
