I have, on occaision, accidently gotten myself into `reply' mode while running `readnews' (on a 4.1BSD VAX (if important)). The trouble is, there seems to be no way to back out of this situation, which becomes embarrasing when one realizes that no matter what one does, some unsuspecting article author is going to receive (at least) a null message from yours-truly. The question: IS there an abort? I have tried deleting all the lines in the edit buffer in the hopes that the mailer wouldn't know who it should send to; unfortunatly, the mailer is smart, and keeps the address privately. I have tried :q! but whatever was in the buffer gets sent anyway! COULD the user-interface be *SO UNFRIENDLY???* Bruce Walker ..decvax!utzoo!aesat!bmw

Here, here. This situation is very frustrating.

This has been covered before. When you do 'r', you are placed into an editor with some header lines already supplied. To abort, merely delete all the lines in the editor buffer, WRITE OUT THE NULL FILE, and exit from the editor. The mailer is subsequently supplied the null file for mailing. Since it can't find a "To:" line, it doesn't have any way of knowing where to send the null file. You get a little error message and that's the end of it. This same technique applies for 'f' (followup) aborting. Cheers, Lindsay Lindsay Cleveland (...{ihnp4|mcnc|sdcsvax|clyde}!akgua!glc) AT&T Technologies/Bell Laboratories ... typing :q! sounds dangerous to me. I tried that on my sun 150 (4.2 bsd) news version 2.10.GOK (God only knows) and it posted an empty message. deleting everything so that there is no Newsgroups or Subject lines and then letting inews bomb sounds better to me. -- -------------------------- Tom Kessler {allegra |seismo }!rochester!ur-laser!tomk Laboratory for Laser Energetics Phone: (716)- 275 - 3786 250 East River Road 275 - 3194 Rochester, New York 14623

< force of habit ... > If your editor is vi, then yuou can just key `:q!', and vi will exit without writing a file. mcvax "Hello shoes! I'm sorry \ but I'm going to have to ukc!west44!gurr stand on you again!" / vax135 Dave Gurr, Miles 33 plc, Bracknell, England.
