[net.news] pcc compiler source needed

donn@utah-cs.UUCP (Donn Seeley) (09/21/84)

Just saw this...

	From: dbr@cybvax0.UUCP (Douglas Robinson)

We are in need of the source to the pcc C compiler. I believe
said source was distributed over the net recently (but before
our site got on the usenet/news boat). Could someone who
archived it/is using it please mail me a note (so I can request
	but ONE copy)?

Mr. Robinson is probably confusing S.C. Johnson's PCC with the DECUS C
preprocessor which Martin Minow posted recently, but it brings up an
important point:

DON'T DISTRIBUTE SOFTWARE UNDER LICENSE TO UNLICENSED SITES.

The DECUS software is public-domain, the PCC is NOT. We haven't had
any lawyers dump on us for iffy things like contextual difference files
with licensed sources, but requests like this could really get us in
trouble. I doubt Mr. Robinson meant any harm, but I am sending this
message out so that people who may have been confused by his mistake
don't get in trouble. Please DON'T mail him the PCC. Remember, 'Use
a modem -- go to jail.'

Waiting for Richard Stallman's opinions,

Mr. Seeley was correct in assuming that what I am looking for was the
DECUS c preprocessor. Would those of you that squirreled away the source
for same please mail me a note (so I can request one copy - thereby reducing
unnecessary net work (sic)).

I must note that I was under the assumption that ONLY PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE
IS EVER DISTRIBUTED ON USENET! Any licensee of BTL must know the kind of
trouble they can get into by distributing BTL source software!

I don't need/want pcc - don't send it to me.

Also, the "requests like this [refering to my previous request]" are NOT
the cause of any trouble. Only when a BTL licensee improperly grants such
a request does trouble arise... and then only for the parties involved.
