[net.news] Newsgroup changes

chuqui@nsc.UUCP (Chuq Von Rospach) (06/20/84)

I've sent out a couple of control messages today. Someone out there
accidently created the groups 'net.all' and 'fa.all'. I've
sent out nuke messages on both of them (thanks, it's been a while since
I've been able to nuke a group!). If the rmgroups don't get to you, delete
these groups and start the rmgroup again, please!

Also, as promised last week, I have created net.sci as a general purpose
place for scientific discussions. this will also be a top level group for
science oriented specialty groups once we figure out how to rename groups
(please, DON'T start moving groups until we figure out how!). enjoy!

Uh, sorry about the net.all and fa.all creation messages. Under my
guidance, six other USENET sites have sucessfully started up without
incident or embarassment. The seventh one I gave a UUCP connection to,
and told where to find the news distribution on my machine, the day I
left for the USENIX Conference in Salt Lake City. When I got back on
Sunday, I found that they had sent out the creation messages and there
was nothing I could do about it. I sent the contact there a letter
telling him to expect all kinds of hate mail, and giving the remedy for
creating his side of the connection. I think that if I had not been
incommunicado, this could have been averted.

Never do anything of lasting import the day you leave for anywhere!

The newsgroup net.adm.site has been removed. It was an experimental
group which never quite worked, and whose purpose should be met by the
uucp map project. Check to make sure that you don't have a "net.adm"
directory sitting around after you delete the group -- there is no
net.adm group.

The net.sources newsgroup is very valuable to many, many people on the
net. It is often archived in some permanent manner by site
administrators. The recent flood of "wanted" articles and discussions
about feature (?) and bugs in posted software has both dismayed and
enraged netters everywhere.

To help rectify the situation, I have created 2 new newsgroups:
net.sources.bugs and net.wanted.sources.

net.sources.bugs is intended for discussions about bugs and features of
posted sources. Almost every followup to articles posted in
net.sources should go to this newsgroup. This is a subgroup of
net.sources instead of being net.bugs.sources for the reason that bug
fixes are desirable to archive as well as the sources.

net.wanted.sources is a subgroup to request specific items of
software. Requests for software, termcap entries, and manual entries
should be posted here and NOT to net.sources.

I will post the updated list of active newsgroups on Oct. 1. I will
also post a news 2.10.2 "checkgroups" message at that time.
