[comp.windows.x] why so many xdms

jeanne@hfh.edu (Jeanne Li) (02/15/90)

We are running the X11R3 on a sun 4/150 and using 2 NCD16 as the
display devices. Whenever one xdm is invoked, there are always four xdms
running in the backgroud. Anyone out there knows why?
        Thanks for any help!

The R3 version of xdm created 2 processes per display for various arcane
reasons. The R4 version was fixed to only use 1 process per display. The R4
version also manages the remote displays much better, detecting when they're
turned off by "pinging" occasionally and doing a host of other useful
tasks.
