I am considering ESIX for X.11 development on a 386. I *do* have budget constraints, so I am carefully researching the whole thing. Which leads to some questions: 1. Just how much does the presence or absence of a 387 affect performance? 2. I'll probably have to start with 4 meg RAM and upgrade to 8 later. Just how much will performance suffer due to swapping with ESIX? With Interactive? 3. Are there any public domain/freeware/shareware/whatever servers for 386's running UNIX? I doubt it, but it's worth asking... 4. Is it worth my while to get and (try to) compile GCC/G++ (in order to have FSF's clone of C++) ? 5. What type of memory consumption can I expect from the server? From typical clients? From xterm? Any differences in memory usage between Interactive and ESIX? 6. What guidelines exist for the masochist who decides to port their own server? 7. How do Interactive and ESIX compare in general? performance? reliability? bugs? I already know how their prices compare :-) 8. Anybody want to sell a used 386 system? Thanks, everybody, for letting me ask the same questions others have probably already asked.
