[comp.windows.x] PEX source request

marcel@tnoibbc.UUCP (Marcel Boender) (02/14/90)

Hello there again,

Last week a had asked about what toolkit/widget-set to use for the
implementation of a graphical interactive query tool for examining a
database containing model data.
Thanks to all who replied to that request !

To satisfy the graphics requirements we have decided to take look at PEX
(Phigs Extension to X). We had heard that PEX would become available along with
X Version 11 Release 4, but it is not part of the sources we've received.

Could anyone please point me out where I can get a copy of the PEX source,
what status PEX is in and indicate why it didn't appear among the XV11R4
sources ?

					Thank you,

						Marcel Boender

Someone called me about this the other day. Let me clear the air. The PEX
sample implemention is not yet avaliable, and is will not be publically
avaliable until at least early next year. This means that there is NO PEX code
on the R4 tape.

The current draft of the PEX specification is avaliable on the tape in
doc/extensions/PEX.

There may be a slight misinterpretation here. The *PEX Protocol Definition*
(v4.0P) went out with X11R4, NOT the PEX source. (BTW for those of you
following the development of the PEX protocol, it's destined for yet another
crank turn -- hopefully the last for a while -- this summer, so watch the
"x11-3d@expo.lcs.mit.edu" mailing alias for announcement of availability of
the new spec. Oh, and *please* send all requests regarding that alias to
  "x11-3d-request@expo.lcs.mit.edu" thanks!)

The PEX Sample Implementation (PEX-SI) effort which is chartered with
producing the source of which you speak will make its release to MIT and
shortly thereafter the public (via regular X11 tape distribution) in
January 1991. Earlier releases are also being made to various sponsoring
consortium groups in the meantime. Unfortunately, if you are not among the
consortium groups who are slated to get the early releases, you will have
to wait for the public release through MIT.

The pex sample implemention is being done by Sun Microsystems and is being
funded by a consortium of sponsors. Sun began work on the sample
implementation just over a year ago and is funded for a two year development
effort. The sponsoring companies has access to pre-releases of the work in
progress as part of their reward for funding the development effort. Pex will
not be distributed by MIT until the development is finished, right now it
appears as if this will be 1st quarter 1991.

The "PEX Demonstration Implementation" was a part of the R3 release
(in the contrib directory). It is (for some reason) not in R4, but I
think it will drop in easily if you can find it. This implements a
(small) subset of the full PEX functionality, but is useful for many
applications.

Contributed software must be explicitly (re)contributed to each release in
order to be included, we do not automatically carry software forever.
