Well, I'm ready to unleash X11R4 on my user community, but I know they are going to scream bloody murder when they find that all their .scf fonts are gone. Is this truly the case, or have I missed something? Sorry, I don't know what a ".scf font" is. X11R4 seems to be long on "serious" fonts and short on "fun" fonts. Is this an accurate impression? If you mean short on those ugly X10 fonts of yore, simply retain them from your current systems. Is there some reason that the .alias files don't contain aliases for a lot of the fonts? Aliases in the core distribution mainly exist for backward compatibility, retaining old-style (e.g. "9x15") names for some common fonts. In general we have tried to move uniformly to XLFD names. I don't see the need for a slew of aliases; perhaps you could enlighten me.
