At this site, we have received dozens of articles that have a path ending with ..ulysses!someone, which the content and signature of the articles show did not originate at ulysses. Also, the organization field of these articles has been replaced with AT&T somethingorother. Many of these articles appear to have originated at Purdue. Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone know what the &%#@*! is going on?!?!? --Greg -- {ucbvax!hplabs | allegra!nbires | decvax!stcvax | harpo!seismo | ihnp4!stcvax} !hao!woods "Every silver lining has a touch of grey..."

Well, I think the problem is that someone (including our site, apparently) is truncating very long path names. Here is one example, article ID is <9217@watmath.UUCP>: Path: hao!hplabs!hpda!fortune!amd!decwrl!decvax!ittvax!dcdwest!sdcsvax!akgua!whuxle!spuxll!abnjh!u1100a!pyuxn!pyuxww!gamma!ulysses!burl!cl I suspect that path after ulysses should have been "burl!clyde!watmath!saquigley" as that article was posted by Sophie Quigley whose path I have seen a lot. On our system, "readnews" shows the path as "...ulysses!bur", showing that it is not only truncated as stored, but also by "readnews" when displaying the path. Looks to me as though there is a maximum path length limit and some of these paths are exceeding that length. I'm willing to bet that the sites "downstream" from us see the path truncated at a different point. We just converted to news version 2.10.2, and I'll bet it isn't a coincidence that I have just started seeing path truncation now. How about it, netnews gurus? What path do you folks in Boulder see for this article? Anyone else noticed path truncation? Copies of this have been sent to the site administrator at ulysses (who would seem to be free from responsibility for this), the SA here, and net.news . --Greg -- {ucbvax!hplabs | allegra!nbires | decvax!stcvax | harpo!seismo | ihnp4!stcvax} !hao!woods "Every silver lining has a touch of grey..."
