Apparently xdm ignores the Coredump bit in the wait struct before emitting
the status value, so in all likelihood the child process probably did core
dump.  Thanks to Keith Packard for pointing this out to me.  At least we
both agreed that the child died from a Segmentation Violation, that makes
me feel better :^)
