I would formally like to request that a new newsgroup called net.nlang.spanish be created for the following reasons: 1) To move Spanish/Hispanic topics to one particular group (Nicaragua & El Salvador issues could be moved from net.politics to this newsgroup). 2) To provide forum for issues not found in other newsgroups (Spanish music styles are not found in net.music). What would/could be included in net.nlang.spanish: 1) politics 2) customs 3) language 4) literature 5) history 6) music 7) arts 8) education 9) cuisine 10) travel 11) religion 12) entertainment 13) technology transfer 14) humor 15) attitudes towards sex & sexes Also places where programs for Spanish/Hispanic studies could be aired. The medium would remain English (Ingles) but the occasional use of Spanish (accompanied by English translation) could be useful for those learning or reviewing the language. Since Latin America is a choice destination for vacationers in the Americas and since the Spanish islands in the Med. Sea & N. Atlantic are choice destinations for Europeans, I expect much interest from the offset in the travel area. For those of us who must feed ourselves, Spanish recepies would also be aprreciated. If you would like to help in the creation of this newsgroup, please followup this article on net.news.group or send e-mail to me: Sunil Trivedi P.O. The creation of net.nlang.spanish is a good idea but I think it should be called net.nlang.iberian to cover all ethno-linguistic groups which originate or have some connection to the iberian peninsula or who have major contacts with such ethno-linguistic groups (purposefully recursive definition to cover Quencha and Nahuatl and other Indian language speaking groups). Therefore topics relating to Basques, Brazilians or Catalan might also appear in this group. However, I do not believe Spanish, Portugese, Catalonian, Basque language articles should be restricted to this newsgroup. People might want to discuss LAN's in one of these languages. Such an article would belong in net.lan and not net.nlang.iberian.

I strongly object to the creation of net.nlang.spanish AS SPECIFIED. If it is to discuss the Spanish language and you can show sufficient interest, fine. But not to discuss cuisine (net.cooks), travel (net.travel), etc. etc. Some large portion (?1/5?) of the world's people speak Spanish; all areas of interest involving them is MUCH too large for one newsgroup; and all we'll get out of it is massive cross-postings to existing groups. Where do you post a recipe for guacamole? You post it to net.nlang.spanish AND to net.cooks, of course. net.nlang.spanish ONLY for Spanish language and ONLY if sufficient interest, please!! -- The MAD Programmer -- 919-228-3313 (Cornet 291) alias: Curtis Jackson ...![ ihnp4 ulysses cbosgd mgnetp ]!burl!rcj ...![ ihnp4 cbosgd akgua masscomp ]!clyde!rcj

I've mentioned this idea to some people in Spanish here at PSU. They are interested to the point they might try dealing with this nasty old computer if it happens. Larry Riffle RBD at PSUVM.BITNET

You post it to net.nlang.spanish > AND to net.cooks, of course. And what would be wrong with that? Cross-postings do not take any additional disk space, so if a recipe is posted in net.cooks it is for those who are interested in cooking while those in net.nlang.spanish would be interested in many other aspects of Spanish culture. All the recipes for Indian food have been posted to both net.nlang.india and net.cooks and I haven't heard any complaints. Indians make up about ~1/5 of the world's population, has ~15 "national" languages, six religions and a very long history. I didn't notice net.nlang.india not "being able to handle the vastness". If someone posted an article about going to Ixtapa, Mexico in both net.nlang.spanish and net.travel, the "travel-only" audience would be able to read it along with those who only read net.nlang.spanish. If you need to see how a net.nlang.spanish could look, look at net.nlang.india or net.nlang.africa. <> martillo@csd2 suggested using the name net.nlang.iberian instead of net.nlang.spanish. Earlier I had suggested net.nlang.espanol and riddle@im4u suggested net.nlang.hispanic. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Hispanic and Iberian imply only particular parts of the Spanish world. Espanol is misspelled (no tilde). I would be interested in the "minorities" in the Spanish world (Amerindians, Basques, etc) as well as in the Visigoths, Jews and Arabs (visigodos, judios y moros) of days gone by. Sunil Trivedi P.O. In the notes world, they are stored as separate articles and take up both disk space and user time (needed to recognize the article and skip past it). Since a fair percentage (25?) of the net uses notes, this is not insignificant -- Rich $alz {mit-eddie, ihnp4!inmet, wjh12, cca, datacube} !mirror!rs Mirror Systems 2067 Massachusetts Ave. 617-661-0777 Cambridge, MA, 02140
